New York, USA – The United Nations has issued a stern warning against the ongoing and intensified Israeli attacks on residential areas in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the utmost necessity of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure from direct targeting. These warnings come amid daily field reports of continuous airstrikes and artillery shelling across various parts of the Strip, resulting in a rising number of casualties. Accordingly, the humanitarian situation in Gaza represents a flagrant challenge to international humanitarian law, as the basic necessities for survival continue to collapse.
UN Warnings of Lack of Safety and Targeting of UNRWA Centers
The Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, confirmed that the current situation in Gaza offers no actual guarantees for civilian safety, as attacks have reached areas previously thought to be safe. Obviously, the shelling has targeted vital facilities such as the UNRWA Maghazi Health Center in Deir al-Balah, causing severe damage to medical infrastructure and resulting in civilian injuries. As a result, the population faces a double threat of direct attacks and the loss of essential medical services.
Continued Humanitarian Work and Urgent Aid for Affected Families
Dujarric explained that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) continues its work despite significant security risks through a joint response mechanism that ensures rapid assistance to stricken families. Certainly, UN efforts succeeded over the past week in providing urgent aid to more than 300 families, including tents and essential shelter supplies. Ultimately, the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains contingent on a cessation of military escalation and ensuring safe and sustainable aid access to all areas of the besieged Strip.
