Washington, DC – The US Navy has warned that the level of mine threat in parts of the Strait of Hormuz remains undetermined.
It urged commercial vessels to exercise extreme caution and advised them
to avoid sailing in certain areas of the strait, according to a US Navy advisory.
Unstable security situation in shipping lanes
The US Navy statement explained that “the mine risk status of the navigation
lane separation system has not been fully determined.”
The statement noted that this system has been in place since 1968.
It also stated that the system regulates ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz
by dividing shipping lanes between Iranian and Omani waters,
thus ensuring the safety of international navigation under normal conditions.
Calls to avoid sensitive sailing areas
The US Navy urged ships to avoid certain areas within the strait due to ongoing security concerns.
Meanwhile, international warnings are mounting regarding potential risks to trade
and energy shipments through one of the world’s most vital waterways.
Conflicting information regarding mine clearance
In a related development, reports quoted US President Donald Trump as saying that Iran is removing
or working to remove naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz with US support.
However, he provided no further details, raising questions about the nature
of the ongoing developments in the region and the timing of the military warnings.
