Baghdad, Iraq – Moroccan Walid Regragui has entered the list of candidates to take over the technical leadership of the Iraqi national team, should the journey of Australian coach Graham Arnold with the “Lions of Mesopotamia” come to an end.
The Iraqi sports channel “Al-Rabia” reported that the Iraqi Football Association has placed the name of Regragui among the most prominent options being considered, coinciding with the approaching end of Arnold’s contract at the end of this month.
She added that the Iraqi Federation will open negotiations with the Moroccan coach if the current meetings with Arnold do not result in a final agreement for him to continue as head of the technical staff.
Regragui is highly regarded within the Iraqi Football Association, given his distinguished coaching record and international experience, making him one of the most prominent names being considered to succeed Arnold.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Football Association officials continue their meetings with the Australian coach, in an attempt to reach an agreement that will determine his future with the national team in the coming period.
The Iraqi national team had made a notable appearance in the 2026 World Cup finals, after returning to the tournament for the first time in many years, but it was eliminated from the group stage, which included the national teams of France, Norway and Senegal.
