New Jersey, USA – US President Donald Trump expressed his desire for the United States to host the World Cup again. This came after the conclusion of the 2026 edition, which saw Spain crowned champions after defeating Argentina in the final.
Trump attended the final match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, marking his first appearance at a World Cup venue. He had been absent from all previous matches throughout the tournament.
During an interview with Fox News, Trump revealed an idea he had discussed with FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the United States hosting the World Cup again. He said, “I suggested to Gianni that he announce two host countries for the World Cup, with the United States being one of them again, and then announce the next one, because that would lessen the shock of waiting to host the tournament”.
He added: “Based on the numbers and public interest, we will request to host the World Cup again at the earliest opportunity. We have to host the tournament again, and I hope that happens while I am still here.. Do you hear me, Gianni?”
The US president praised the success of the current tournament, emphasizing that it had been a resounding success on all levels. He said, “I don’t think any other sporting event has seen what we’ve seen in the World Cup. It has been a fantastic tournament by all accounts, and I commend Gianni Infantino for the work he has done”.
The 2026 World Cup saw 48 teams participate for the first time in the tournament’s history. The edition, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, concluded with Spain winning their second world title.
