Vancouver, Canada – New Zealand suffered a blow just days before their highly anticipated match against Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, with midfielder Matt Garbett ruled out due to injury.
The New Zealand Football Federation announced that the player sustained a hamstring injury during a recent training session.
As a result, the medical staff were forced to sideline him for the remainder of the tournament,
just as the team was preparing to continue their campaign in Group G.
A sudden injury changes the calculations
New Zealand Football confirmed in an official statement that the coaching
and medical staff were deeply disappointed to learn that Garbett would be unable to continue.
The statement emphasized that the team stands by the player during this difficult time,
especially given the importance of his participation in the World Cup.
In a swift move to compensate for his absence, the New Zealand national team announced
the inclusion of striker Logan Rogerson in the squad to replace Garbett.
This was an attempt to maintain squad balance ahead of upcoming matches, most notably the game against Egypt.
