Tehran, Iran – Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj confirmed that his country has not made a final decision regarding withdrawing from the 2026 World Cup, in light of the recent military escalation.
Taj explained that the current circumstances make it difficult to discuss participation in the tournament in a normal manner. He also indicated that the issue of withdrawal or continued participation will be reviewed by the country’s highest sports authorities before a final decision is made.
The region is witnessing escalating tensions following the strikes that targeted Iran on Saturday, amid continued military responses so far by America and Israel.
The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, from June 11 to July 19.
The draw placed Iran in Group G alongside Egypt, Belgium and New Zealand.
In televised remarks on the Iranian channel AREB, Taj stated that the federation could not definitively confirm a withdrawal at this time. He added that the recent escalation made discussing the football atmosphere difficult. He emphasized that a decision would be made after a thorough assessment of the situation.
