Tehran, Iran – An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck the Saland region of Dezful city in Khuzestan province (Ahvaz) in southern Iran early Sunday morning. Local authorities immediately mobilized to assess the situation.

Earthquake details

According to data released by the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute at Tehran University, the earthquake occurred at 5:55:21 AM. The earthquake struck at a depth of 12 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. The center located the epicenter at 32.58 degrees north latitude and 48.61 degrees east longitude. Furthermore, the earthquake was centered in a geographically active area.

It is located approximately 23 kilometers from both Saland and Dezful. The distance from Andimeshk is 27 kilometers, and from other parts of Dezful, it is 29 kilometers. Saland is the administrative center of the mountainous Sardasht region, which is part of Dezful province. It is located about 25 kilometers from the city center. The area is mountainous and prone to seismic activity.

Field response and state of alert

Immediately after the earthquake, the governor of Khuzestan, Mohammad Reza Mavalizadeh, announced a state of maximum alert for relief teams and executive bodies. He also confirmed that specialized field teams had been dispatched to the affected area to closely assess the situation. The governor noted that there was ongoing coordination with the Geophysics Institute to receive real-time seismic updates. Furthermore, any potential aftershocks were being monitored.

In a reassuring initial assessment, the governor confirmed that field reports received so far have not recorded any injuries or fatalities. No significant material damage or infrastructure collapses have also been reported. Nevertheless, relevant authorities continue monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of residents in the villages and areas surrounding the city of Saland. Emergency teams remain on standby to respond immediately to any unforeseen developments.

This earthquake serves as a reminder of the geographic nature of Khuzestan province. Authorities continue to urge citizens to adhere to safety measures. They also emphasized the importance of ignoring rumors circulating on social media and relying solely on official statements issued by relevant authorities.
