Beijing, China – Eight people have died and others are missing after severe thunderstorms and torrential rains triggered widespread flooding across several regions of central China. Warnings have been issued for continued severe weather in the coming days.
Chinese authorities reported that the heavy rainfall caused rivers and streams to overflow unexpectedly, flooding residential areas and closing major roads. Power outages and transportation disruptions have also affected several cities and towns.
The government has deployed rescue and emergency teams to the affected areas, where they are continuing search and rescue operations for the missing and evacuating stranded residents. Simultaneously, temporary shelters have been opened to accommodate those affected and provide them with basic necessities.
Authorities have also declared a state of high alert in several provinces. Residents have been warned of the risks of flash floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas. Citizens have been urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and to follow the instructions of emergency teams.
China experiences frequent heavy rainfall and extreme weather events during the summer season. These rains often lead to floods and landslides, causing significant loss of life and property. For this reason, authorities are strengthening rapid response measures and disaster mitigation efforts.
