Tehran, Iran – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced early Monday morning that it had carried out a surprise attack targeting what it described as a “US military special operations command center” in the al-Tanf region of Syria. The official statement issued by the IRGC claimed that the operation resulted in the deaths of a “large” number of American military personnel. Additionally, a radar system and several helicopters at the site were destroyed.

The IRGC asserted that this attack was “retaliation” for the deaths of seven Iranian military personnel in recent US airstrikes targeting an Iranian military base in Bampur, near the city of Iranshahr. The Iranian military also indicated that 13 missiles struck soldiers’ living quarters and guard posts within the base.

The problem of strategic location

It is worth noting that the al-Tanf region is strategically located at the tri-border area between Syria, Iraq, and Jordan. It is an area long used by US forces to monitor the movements of extremist groups. However, on February 12, 2026, US Central Command announced the completion of its withdrawal from the al-Tanf garrison and the handover of the site to Syrian government forces. This casts doubt on Iranian claims regarding targeting an “American presence” at this location.

Threats to close the Strait of Hormuz

In a related development, the Revolutionary Guard emphasized that it maintains “complete control” over the Strait of Hormuz. It also issued a direct threat to prevent the export of “a single drop of oil or gas” through this vital waterway as long as US military operations continue. These threats come amid escalating tensions surrounding the strait, through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil trade passes, particularly following Washington’s announcement of a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

The region is experiencing widespread disruptions to shipping and energy supplies. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on July 12th the closure of the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, following the firing of warning shots at a vessel it accused of violating navigation regulations. These Iranian actions come at a time of escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington. This threatens further complications for global energy security and international trade routes in the region, amidst a state of high military alert on various fronts.
