Amman, Jordan – The U.S. Embassy in Jordan issued an urgent security alert on Sunday, July 19, 2026, urging all U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Aqaba Airport or the seaport until further notice. This comes in light of intelligence information regarding a “specific and credible threat.”

Safety guidelines for American citizens

The embassy stressed in its statement the importance of American citizens adhering to the directives of local authorities and avoiding travel to military bases. Additionally, they should stay away from any large gatherings or areas with a heavy security presence. The embassy also urged Americans to monitor local media and remain informed of security developments. It further advised them to contact their airlines if their flights are affected. The embassy confirmed that its directives are an extension of the State Department order issued on March 2, 2026, which mandated the departure of non-essential personnel and their families.

tense regional security context

This local warning comes as part of a comprehensive global security alert issued by the United States on Saturday evening to American citizens worldwide. The alert warned of a potential for unexpected escalation due to intelligence indicating Iran’s intention to target American interests abroad. These developments come amidst escalating tensions between the United States and Iran that began on February 28. According to the Associated Press, the death toll among American military personnel has reached 16, with more than 430 wounded.

On the ground, the US Central Command announced last Friday the deaths of two service members and the disappearance of a third during its response to intense Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting Jordan. These attacks also necessitated the evacuation of four service members for medical treatment. These measures reflect the state of high alert imposed by Washington to protect its interests and citizens in the region. This comes amidst ongoing military operations and exchanges of attacks that raise serious concerns about the escalation of the conflict.
