Tokyo, Japan – Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara announced on Tuesday that the Japanese government is still awaiting further clarification regarding the US proposals for a blockade against Iran. It is also monitoring plans to impose a 20% transit fee on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Kihara told reporters that Tokyo would not offer any official comments or predictions on the plan at this time, citing the lack of clarity surrounding its details.
رPriority to easing regional tensions
The Japanese official stressed that his country considers de-escalating the rising tensions between the United States and Iran a top diplomatic priority. Kihara noted that stability in this vital region is a strategic interest for Japan, given its heavy reliance on energy supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz. He affirmed that Tokyo continues to call for restraint and urges all parties to avoid any actions that could lead to open military confrontation.
Japanese concerns about civilian ships being targeted
In a related development, the Chief Cabinet Secretary expressed the Japanese government’s “serious concerns” regarding the attacks targeting civilian vessels in the region. Kihara emphasized that Japan is closely monitoring these developments. He stressed that the continuation of such acts undermines international maritime security and threatens the safety of seafaring crews. This necessitates international action to prevent the recurrence of such dangerous incidents.
Calls to end the crisis and resume free navigation
Kihara explained that Japan’s most pressing issue at the moment is ending the crisis as quickly as possible. He called on both sides, Tehran and Washington, to continue dialogue to bridge their differences. He also stressed that the ultimate goal must be the resumption of free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, without restrictions or military threats.
Diplomatic consultations continue
Kihara concluded his remarks by emphasizing that Japanese diplomacy will continue its proactive approach of consulting with all relevant parties.
He affirmed that Tokyo is conducting intensive consultations with Washington, Tehran, the Gulf states, and other international partners. This is to discuss the implications of the proposed transit fees and their potential impact on the global economy. Tokyo is also striving to ensure a solution that safeguards the security of international maritime routes. Furthermore, it aims to prevent the region from sliding into further escalation that could harm everyone’s interests.
