Nouakchott, Mauritania – Controversy has intensified in Mauritania in recent days regarding the fate of public donations collected to support the residents of the Gaza Strip, following accusations leveled by legal and media figures against entities and associations affiliated with the Islamist movement. This comes amidst growing calls for independent investigations to uncover the funds’ whereabouts and final destination. The issue was brought back to the forefront by Mauritanian lawyer Mohamed Ould Amine, who spoke of suspicions concerning the mismanagement of funds collected during widespread solidarity campaigns for the Gaza Strip. He demanded transparency regarding the amount of donations, the mechanisms for their transfer, and the recipients. His statements sparked a wave of political and media debate within the country.
This controversy comes months after widely publicized statements by Palestinian Sheikh Taysir Tarban, who claimed that substantial Mauritanian donations collected for the benefit of Gaza residents did not fully reach those in need within the Strip. This prompted a response from sources close to Hamas at the time, who asserted that the funds reached the resistance and various segments of the civilian population in Gaza. In recent days, the debate has intensified following statements attributed to the Palestinian ambassador to Mauritania regarding the fate of the donations. This has provoked angry reactions from political and media figures, who believe the statements raise further questions about the mechanisms for managing the funds collected in the name of supporting Gaza.
No publicly available judicial evidence has been released yet.
Despite the escalating accusations, no judicial investigations or official oversight reports have yet emerged to substantiate any embezzlement or systematic diversion of funds for other purposes within Mauritania. Meanwhile, critics are demanding the publication of detailed financial statements outlining the size of the donations and their beneficiaries. This has kept the issue largely within the realm of political and media debate, rather than a legally resolved case.
Similar accusations outside Mauritania
In parallel with the Mauritanian controversy, the regional scene witnessed media reports during 2025 and 2026 alleging that charitable organizations linked to figures or networks affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood outside Mauritania had misused funds raised under the guise of supporting Gaza. Particularly in Turkey, these allegations centered on the misuse of funds collected for this purpose. Some of these reports were based on statements from researchers and testimonies circulating among Palestinian sources, while others denied the validity of these accusations.
Demands for transparency
Observers believe the case reflects a growing need for greater transparency and oversight of cross-border fundraising campaigns, particularly those related to major humanitarian crises. This need is amplified by the difficulty of tracing the flow of funds once they reach conflict zones. As the controversy continues, the question remains in Mauritania: will future investigations uncover the truth about the fate of the donations, or will the case remain a battleground for political and media accusations in the absence of conclusive legal evidence?
