Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in Jeddah on Friday for a one-day official visit, where he was received by state media. A historic joint defense agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan is expected to be signed today. This is according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

A tripartite summit in Jeddah to sign the defense agreement

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the Turkish President arrived in Jeddah for a high-level strategic summit. Erdogan, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif (accompanied by Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir), and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will meet. The meeting aims to sign a trilateral agreement designed to strengthen frameworks for joint military cooperation. This significant step comes at a time of considerable security instability in the region. In particular, Gulf states are facing threats and aggression from Iran. This has necessitated the formation of strong defense alliances to safeguard regional stability.

A regional alliance amid war and shifting power dynamics

This summit is taking place under exceptional circumstances, amidst an ongoing war in the Middle East between Iran on one side, and the United States and Israel on the other. These confrontations are forcing profound regional shifts in the balance of power and strategic alliances. It is worth noting that since the outbreak of the war last February, relations between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan have strengthened within the framework of an active four-way alliance. This alliance has been actively working to mediate and reach diplomatic solutions to the ongoing conflict.

Hormuz Strait talks and developments in the regional situation

The anticipated trilateral meeting in Jeddah coincides with positive indications of potential progress on a mechanism for reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, following discussions between Tehran and Oman. Despite these indications, direct negotiations between Tehran and Washington remain stalled. These developments, both on the ground and in the political arena, underscore the importance of the new defense agreement between Riyadh, Ankara, and Islamabad. This agreement aims to unify military and security perspectives in the face of escalating regional challenges.
