Cairo, Egypt – Amidst the rapidly evolving security situation in the Middle East, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty held a telephone conversation with US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Wittkopf, to discuss ways to contain the ongoing military escalation between the United States and Iran. Abdel-Aty and Wittkopf reviewed the latest regional developments. This meeting took place within the framework of ongoing coordination between Cairo and Washington.
Diplomatic efforts to contain tensions
During the call, Minister Abdel-Aty reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for resolving current crises through dialogue and diplomacy.
He also welcomed the progress made in the recent memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. He stressed the importance of adhering to it as a pivotal step toward reducing tensions and enhancing regional security and stability. For his part, the US envoy commended Egypt’s vital role in supporting stabilization efforts and praised Cairo’s efforts to bridge the gaps between the various parties.
Continued US military strikes
This diplomatic activity coincided with the announcement by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) that it had conducted its seventh consecutive night of intensive military strikes against Iran. According to CENTCOM’s statement, the operations targeted observation posts, military logistics infrastructure, and underground weapons depots. Additionally, the operations included neutralizing Iranian naval capabilities.
A variety of formations participated in these operations, including fighter jets, drones, and warships. Central Command confirmed that the attacks, which began Friday night at 3:00 PM Eastern Time, were carried out under orders from the US president. Central Command also announced its intention to continue these operations and impose a complete naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Regional state of alert
These developments come at a time when the United States has placed more than 50,000 troops in the Middle East on high operational alert. At the conclusion of their phone call, the Egyptian and American sides agreed to maintain channels of coordination and consultation in the coming period. This is an attempt to contain the repercussions of this military escalation and prevent the region from sliding into a full-blown confrontation that threatens security interests and regional stability. All eyes remain on Cairo and Washington to monitor any developments that could lead to a de-escalation of the situation or a wider conflict.
