Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy launched a scathing attack on the Russian leadership, mocking Moscow’s repeated failures to achieve its military objectives despite its ongoing campaign. This comes as Russia grapples with a worsening domestic energy crisis.
Mocking the “illusion” of control
In a social media post on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Zelensky mocked the Russian military’s ability to deliver on its promises on the ground. He noted that the deadline Moscow had set for capturing the Donetsk region had been “postponed 15 times.”
Zelensky stated, “The Russian military has had 15 opportunities to capture our region, but they simply keep postponing the deadlines.” The Ukrainian president described Russia’s claims of complete control over the Donbas region (Donetsk and Luhansk) as a “delusion.” He emphasized that these territories remain a cornerstone of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Energy crises and fractures on the home front
Zelensky’s attack wasn’t limited to the military sphere. He also highlighted the crippling fuel crisis plaguing Russian cities.
He addressed Russian citizens directly, saying, “The million Russians who are complaining while standing in long lines at gas stations should consider the even greater difficulties that await them.”
These remarks come amidst implicit acknowledgments from Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, who recently stated that his country is “going through difficult times.”
Field shifts and a qualitative escalation
In a significant development, analytical reports from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) indicate that the balance of power on the ground has gradually shifted in Ukraine’s favor. Ukrainian forces have regained more territory than they lost during April and May.
This shift is attributed to a new Ukrainian strategy of striking deep inside Russian energy infrastructure. This strategy utilizes long-range drones and domestically produced Flamingo missiles. These attacks have led to widespread disruptions in energy supplies, including in Crimea. Furthermore, there has been a series of shutdowns at oil facilities.
Open war of attrition
Ukraine announced the launch of “Operation Forty Days” a few days ago. This escalation aims to deplete Russian capabilities and force Moscow to confront the consequences of war within its borders. On the ground, this has been translated into intensive nighttime attacks. For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the interception of 419 Ukrainian drones in a single night. These drones targeted several areas, including the outskirts of Moscow.
With this mutual escalation continuing and no prospect of peace negotiations in sight, the chances of international mediation are fading. Furthermore, concurrent crises in other regions, such as the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, make it difficult for major powers, particularly the United States, to dedicate themselves to mediating the Ukrainian conflict. Therefore, the possibility of a protracted confrontation remains.
