Tokyo, Japan – In a strategic move aimed at securing vital supply chains, Tokyo is preparing to send a high-level delegation to Greenland this summer to assess the potential for extracting rare earth minerals, the Nikkei newspaper reported Sunday. This move comes amid a fierce global race to secure resources needed for advanced technology industries and clean energy, placing the Arctic island at the center of international attention.
Japanese delegation to promote cooperation
The newspaper explained that the Japanese delegation will consist of officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, as well as representatives from major trading companies and the Japan Energy and Minerals Security Organization. The delegation is scheduled to hold extensive talks with Greenland government officials to explore potential avenues for cooperation. These moves follow a series of geopolitical developments that have drawn attention to the island. For example, the White House announced last January that US President Donald Trump was considering acquiring the island, a statement that at the time alarmed NATO members. Since then, this interest has shifted towards diplomatic channels focused on joint investment.
Exceptional mineral wealth
Greenland’s unique strategic location and mineral reserves make it an ideal destination for global companies. According to estimates by the US Geological Survey and specialized research centers, the island possesses approximately 1.5 million metric tons of proven rare earth oxide reserves, ranking it eighth globally.
These resources are diverse, including minerals that are crucial to modern technologies, most notably:
Energy and transport components: Dysprosium, which is used in the manufacture of electric vehicle motors, and high-quality graphite used in the electrodes of these vehicles’ batteries.
Advanced technology: Terbium, essential for the production of super-strong magnets, semiconductors, and smartphone displays.
Various minerals: The deposits also contain reserves of uranium, zinc, gold, and lithium.
Strategic importance of modern technologies
Rare earth elements such as neodymium, prasedium, and yttrium, found in Greenland, are essential components in military defense systems, renewable energy technologies, and digital transformation. With increasing global demand for these resources to ensure technological independence, Japan aims to reduce its reliance on current suppliers through this visit. It also seeks to secure direct access to raw materials that will guarantee the sustainability of its advanced industries and pioneering clean energy projects. This will enhance its economic security in the face of international market volatility.
