Washington, DC – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that talks aimed at reaching a political settlement to the war in Ukraine have reached a stalemate. He confirmed that diplomatic efforts have not yet achieved any real breakthrough that could be built upon to end the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.

Rubio stated that the gap between the two sides’ positions remains significant, explaining that the disagreements concern fundamental issues including the territory controlled by Russia and security guarantees. Furthermore, there are disagreements regarding the future of relations between Ukraine and NATO.

He added that the United States continues to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a political solution. However, it believes that current circumstances do not allow for rapid progress given the ongoing military operations and escalating attacks on various fronts.

The US Secretary of State noted that Washington continues to coordinate with its European allies regarding the future of military and economic support for Ukraine. He also emphasized that the US administration considers maintaining a unified Western stance essential in confronting Russia.

Rubio’s remarks come at a time of growing international calls to revive the negotiation process after months of military escalation. This is especially true given the continued human and economic losses and the war’s spillover into global energy and food markets.

In contrast, Moscow insists that any future settlement must take into account the “new reality on the ground.” Meanwhile, Kyiv maintains its refusal to make any concessions regarding Ukrainian sovereignty or territory.

Observers believe that the stalled talks reflect the complexity of the political and military landscape, particularly with each side clinging to its fundamental conditions. Therefore, the chances of reaching a comprehensive agreement in the near future appear limited, despite increasing international pressure to end the war.
