Yerevan, Armenia – The Armenian Prime Minister affirmed that the upcoming parliamentary elections represent a crucial political milestone for maintaining peace and stability with Azerbaijan. He also emphasized that the government is striving to prevent any further escalation in the Caucasus region after years of tensions and border conflicts between the two countries.
The Prime Minister explained that the current phase requires popular and political support to complete de-escalation efforts and reach long-term understandings. He noted that internal stability in Armenia is a fundamental element for the success of any regional agreements concerning security, borders, and bilateral relations.
He noted that his country faces complex political and economic challenges. However, the government believes that continuing dialogue with Azerbaijan is preferable to a return to military confrontations, which have plagued the region and negatively impacted humanitarian and developmental conditions in recent years.
The Armenian political scene is clearly divided between forces supporting de-escalation and openness to diplomatic settlements. On the other hand, there are opposition currents that believe the government has made significant concessions on issues related to the historical conflict with Azerbaijan, particularly after the recent developments in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Observers believe the upcoming elections could become an indirect referendum on the government’s policy toward relations with Baku. This comes at a time of increasing internal pressure related to the economic situation and national security concerns.
International and regional powers are also closely monitoring political developments in Armenia, given the importance of stability in the Caucasus region and its impact on energy and trade routes, as well as the region’s geopolitical balance.
The Armenian government has affirmed its continued cooperation with international mediators to advance peace efforts. At the same time, it stressed the need to respect the sovereignty of states and ensure security and stability for all the peoples of the region, expressing hope that the upcoming political phase will contribute to reducing tensions and opening a new chapter in relations between the two sides.
