Washington, DC – The possible motives behind the attack on the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner are becoming clearer, as messages and writings attributed to the suspect, Cole Thomas Allen, reveal sharp political grievances and scathing criticism of the policies of US President Donald Trump’s administration.
According to a letter reviewed by The Associated Press, authorities indicated that Allen, 31, described himself as a “friendly federal killer” in messages he sent to his family minutes before the attack.
Disjointed messages and political grievances
The letter, which exceeded a thousand words, had a personal and shocking tone, beginning with “Hello everyone!” before turning into apologies to his family and colleagues. In his letter, Allen also criticized the actions of the US administration, including military strikes against drug-smuggling boats in the Pacific Ocean. He also mocked the security measures at the Washington Hilton Hotel, expressing his astonishment at how easily he entered the hotel armed to the teeth without being detected.
Investigators believe these notes, along with his extensive anti-Trump social media posts, provide the clearest evidence of the suspect’s “thinking.”
His digital accounts reveal a highly educated “teacher” and an amateur video game developer. However, his family members have described his recent tendencies as having become “radicalized.”
Family movements and cooperation with security
The Allen family played a crucial role in quickly identifying him; his brother contacted the New London police immediately after receiving the alarming messages, a call made approximately two hours after the shooting.
His sister told investigators that Allen had legally purchased his weapons in California and hidden them in their parents’ home in Torrance without their knowledge. She also described his recent behavior as increasingly extreme in his public statements.
This incident presents US security agencies with a difficult test regarding how to secure major events attended by the president. The challenge is compounded by the attacker’s admission of how easily the security perimeter was breached.
