Beijing, China – Amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the Chinese Embassy in Tehran issued a new travel warning to its citizens and companies operating in the Islamic Republic. The embassy emphasized that the security situation remains highly volatile and unstable.
This warning comes despite official Iranian announcements regarding the partial reopening of airspace and the resumption of some flights. However, Beijing considers this insufficient to guarantee the safety of foreigners in Iran at present.
Strict warnings and precautionary measures
In a statement published on its official social media platforms, the embassy indicated that the relative calm that may appear on the surface does not necessarily reflect the true risks on the ground. It also stressed that the possibility of a sudden military escalation remains. Such an escalation could lead to repeated airspace closures or disruptions to supply chains and essential services. The embassy clarified that “the reopening of airspace does not necessarily mean the end of the risk of military operations or retaliatory strikes.”
Calls to refrain from travel
This warning aligns with the strict stance previously adopted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, which issued an urgent appeal to its citizens to completely refrain from traveling to Iran until further notice. For Chinese nationals currently in Iran, the embassy advised them to monitor local and international news reports around the clock. It also advised them to avoid areas near military installations or strategic sites and to stockpile sufficient quantities of food and essential medical supplies.
Context of regional tension
China’s cautious stance reflects the major powers’ concern about the region sliding toward a full-blown confrontation. Despite the strong strategic and economic ties between Beijing and Tehran, protecting Chinese citizens remains the Chinese government’s top priority.
Analysts believe this warning represents a realistic assessment of the situation, as Beijing recognizes that the mutual threats between Iran and its adversaries could escalate into a new phase of direct confrontation at any moment. This makes remaining in conflict zones a risky gamble. The embassy concludes its statement by affirming its readiness to provide emergency consular assistance. It also urges citizens to strictly adhere to security instructions issued by both local and Chinese authorities.
