Damascus, Syria – In a significant security and judicial development, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Friday that security forces had successfully arrested Amjad Youssef, the prime suspect and direct perpetrator of the “Tadamon neighborhood massacre,” which shocked Syrian and international public opinion and whose bloody events took place in the southern suburbs of the capital, Damascus, during the era of the former regime.
Security operation in the Hama countryside
The Ministry explained in an official statement that the Internal Security Forces were able to locate and track the suspect before carrying out a precise and surprise security operation in the Hama countryside, which resulted in his arrest without any casualties.
The statement confirmed that Youssef had been in hiding since the collapse of the security apparatus of the ousted regime, attempting to evade legal prosecution for his documented crimes.
The criminal and the video recording
Amjad Yousef, born in 1986, is one of the most notorious figures associated with human rights abuses in Syria. He held the rank of officer in the former regime’s military intelligence service. His criminal reputation grew after a horrific video surfaced showing him coldly executing dozens of civilians in the field by shooting them, throwing them into a pre-prepared mass grave, and then setting their bodies on fire to conceal the crime.
Completing the path of justice
The arrest of Youssef is the latest in a series of security and legal measures aimed at holding those involved in war crimes accountable.
Authorities announced in February 2025 the arrest of three other accomplices in the same massacre, including Kamel Abbas, known as “Mario,” who appeared clearly in leaked recordings assisting Youssef in mass killings and the torture of victims.
Reactions and waiting
The news of the arrest sparked a wave of relief among the victims’ families and human rights activists, who considered the move a crucial step in building a state of law and transitional justice.
Youssef is expected to undergo extensive investigations to uncover the remaining perpetrators and the locations of other mass graves for which he may be responsible, paving the way for a public trial that will bring justice to the thousands of families who have waited years to see the perpetrators behind bars.
This operation underscores the current security apparatus’s commitment to pursuing all those responsible for human rights violations, no matter how long they have evaded justice, to ensure that no criminal escapes punishment.
