Baghdad, Iraq – In a diplomatic move aimed at curbing escalating tensions on its eastern border, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) of Iraq expressed its deep concern and categorical rejection on Friday of recent accusations made by Iranian judicial and media institutions.
These allegations claim that a number of individuals convicted in security cases within the Islamic Republic received military and intelligence training within the Kurdistan Region. It is worth noting that this training was conducted by foreign agencies.
A firm rejection and refutation of the claims.
The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Department of Foreign Relations issued a firm statement rejecting these accusations “in their entirety.” The statement emphasized that there are no headquarters, training centers, or activities belonging to international intelligence agencies on the territory of the Kurdistan Region. It also described linking Kurdistan to these issues as “baseless and completely detached from reality.”
The department explained that the repeated leveling of such accusations at this sensitive time is deeply concerning, especially as the region is going through exceptional circumstances that require the utmost restraint and responsible dialogue, rather than accusations that could lead to further instability.
Commitment to neutrality and good neighborliness
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to its role as a force for stability, neutrality, and peaceful coexistence in Iraq and the region, emphasizing its full respect for the Iraqi Constitution and the principles of good neighborliness and friendship with neighboring countries.
The statement stressed that the territory of the Kurdistan Region will never be used to undermine the security and stability of any neighboring country. This is a strategic commitment that Erbil is keen to uphold. It also aims to prevent the region from becoming an arena for open conflict.
A call to Baghdad and the international community
In a related context, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) called on the federal government in Baghdad to take decisive action and uphold its constitutional responsibilities to protect the sovereignty of Iraq in all its parts, and to stand firmly against any unjustified violations or accusations targeting the region’s territory.
The KRG also appealed to the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions, respect national sovereignty, and protect civilians. It emphasized the importance of supporting lasting peace in the region to prevent it from sliding into wider conflicts, which could threaten regional and international security.
