Tehran, Iran – In the latest episode of the systematic targeting of human rights voices in Iran, security authorities arrested prominent human rights lawyer and activist Nasrin Sotoudeh from her residence in Tehran. The arrest remains shrouded in mystery regarding who carried it out and the charges against her.

Details of the raid and arrest

Mehraveh Khandan, the daughter of Sotoudeh, who lives outside Iran, revealed on her Instagram account on Thursday that her mother was arrested while alone at home.

Mehraveh explained that security forces not only took her mother to an unknown location but also confiscated her personal electronic devices, including her mobile phone and laptop. This suggests a security attempt to access the files and work of the lawyer, who is known for defending political prisoners and human rights issues.

Family under security siege

The arrest of Sotoudeh, a former political prisoner who faced harsh sentences for years, adds to the suffering of her family; her husband, activist Reza Khandan, has been imprisoned since December 2024. Human rights observers believe that targeting the couple together aims to dismantle their family support and exert psychological pressure on the activist, who has received international awards for her courage, including the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

Context of increasing repression

This arrest coincides with an escalating crackdown in Iran, targeting lawyers who defend protesters and dissidents. Nasrin Sotoudeh is a global icon of peaceful resistance. She has been repeatedly arrested and barred from practicing law for her opposition to the country’s restrictive laws. This move has sparked widespread international concern, with condemnations expected from major human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. These organizations have consistently called for the unconditional release of Sotoudeh and her husband, arguing that the charges against them are politically motivated and retaliatory, failing to meet even the most basic standards of a fair trial.
