Rabat, Morocco – The Maghreb Arab Press Agency reported that the fifteenth session of the Association Council between the Kingdom of Morocco and the European Union concluded its work in the Belgian capital Brussels. This was highlighted in the agency’s coverage.
It witnessed the adoption of a new European position on the Western Sahara issue,
The agency described it as a “fundamental development” in the international approach to this regional conflict.
According to the agency, the joint statement issued at the conclusion of the Council’s work included the European Union’s endorsement. Notably, all twenty-seven of its member states supported the decision.
That the autonomy proposal put forward by Morocco could constitute “one of the most viable solutions” for reaching a final settlement of the Sahara issue.
Serious talks without preconditions
The statement was signed by Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad,
And the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Kallas.
The statement affirmed that the European Union endorses the call made by the UN Security Council to all parties concerned.
This is in order to engage in serious talks without preconditions, and on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy plan.
This is with the aim of reaching a lasting and mutually agreed political solution.
The Union also expressed its welcome for Morocco’s willingness to clarify the mechanisms for implementing autonomy within the framework of its national sovereignty.
In the same context, the European Union praised Security Council Resolution 2797 issued in 2025,
He renewed his support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy. In addition, he encouraged efforts to facilitate negotiations based on the Moroccan autonomy initiative.
A strong boost to the settlement process
This new European position comes within the framework of the international dynamic launched by the Moroccan monarch, King Mohammed VI. It aims to support the Moroccan Sahara and promote the autonomy proposal.
This is a dynamic that has gained increasing support from a number of European and international countries in recent years.
The Maghreb Arab Press Agency considered that the agreement of the member states of the European Union on this position represents a strong boost to the political settlement process.
It would also open new horizons for strengthening the strategic partnership between Morocco and the European Union.
This is on both the political and economic levels. Moreover, it encourages future bilateral commitments that are deeper and more cooperative.
