  • The future of “The Windmills” after Koeman

Amsterdam, Netherlands – Veteran Dutch coach Ronald Koeman has officially announced his departure from his position as manager of the Dutch national team. This comes in the wake of the Netherlands’ painful elimination from the 2026 World Cup. The team was knocked out after a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the round of 32.

The decision to leave: The end of an era under the pressure of results

This decisive decision brings Koeman’s tenure as head coach of the national team to an end. He informed the Dutch Football Association of his unwillingness to renew his contract. This move is a natural response to the public’s disappointment and the immense pressure that followed the team’s early exit from the World Cup. Expectations had far exceeded reaching the round of 32.

A remarkable journey and a source of pride in belonging

In a heartfelt message to Dutch football fans, Koeman said: “Last night I made the decision to end my tenure as national team coach. When I look back on my career, which has spanned many years, I feel above all pride and gratitude.” In his farewell address, Koeman recounted the highlights of his illustrious career, saying: “I have had the privilege of working at such prestigious clubs as Vitesse, Ajax, Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord, Southampton, Everton, and Barcelona, and of course, two stints with the Dutch national team. These clubs and the people who have accompanied me on this journey have shaped who I am and given me memories I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Take responsibility for the World Cup disappointment

Regarding the disappointing performance at the 2026 World Cup, Koeman expressed his deep regret at not meeting expectations. He added, “We all dreamed of a World Cup where we would make history. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. No one is more disappointed than I am with how things turned out.”

In closing, Koeman emphasized his complete acceptance of responsibility. He explained, “As the national team coach, I take full responsibility for this failure, and I will continue to feel that responsibility towards the fans and the players.”

The future of “The Windmills” after Koeman

It is worth noting that Koeman’s departure opens the door for the Dutch Football Association to begin the search for a new coach to rebuild the national team. At this time, Dutch fans are eager to see the “Oranje” regain their international prestige after this World Cup setback. Koeman’s career as both player and coach remains one of the most remarkable in the history of Dutch football, despite this final chapter, which came with their elimination against Morocco.
