The "conspiracy" case: Prison sentences ranging from 10 to 45 years in one of the most prominent political cases in Tunisia

Tunis, Republic of Tunisia – The specialized criminal chamber for terrorism cases at the Tunis Court of Appeal issued final prison sentences early this morning, Friday.

The sentences ranged between 10 and 45 years for a number of defendants

in the case known as “conspiracy against state security”.

Which includes prominent political figures and activists.

A judicial source confirmed to the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) news agency

that the sentences handed down to the detainees ranged between 10 and 45 years.

This is in addition to the ruling not to hear the case concerning one detained defendant.

Effective provisions

Regarding those accused who were released on bail,

the sentences ranged between 5 and 35 years in prison.

Meanwhile, the case against two defendants was dismissed.

As for the defendants who are fugitives, the initial rulings stipulated

a 33-year prison sentence with immediate effect.

The sentence was increased for some of them to as much as 43 years.

It also included various financial offenses, in addition to the confiscation of funds.

Deposited in the accounts of a number of defendants within Tunisian financial institutions.

For its part, the defense team refused to recognize the legitimacy of these rulings.

She described it as a “farce” marred by serious procedural violations.

This is similar to relying on anonymous witnesses and conducting trials in absentia.

including Issam Chebbi and Jawhar Ben Mbarek,
