Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has called on his country’s allies to urgently supply it with locomotives, after Russian strikes destroyed or damaged more than 500 locomotives, according to statements carried by Ukrainian media.
Widespread damage to the railway sector
Sepeha said that the Russian attacks targeted Ukraine’s transport infrastructure, causing significant damage to the railway system, which is a vital artery for transporting passengers, goods, and supplies within the country.
This damage comes at a time when Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, including energy and transport facilities, as the war continues.
Kyiv requests urgent support
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister stressed that his country urgently needs new locomotives to help maintain transport operations and replace equipment that was taken out of service by the strikes.
Ukraine is heavily reliant on its railway network under wartime conditions, especially with the continued need to transport civilians, supplies, and essential materials between different regions.
Russian strikes escalate
Kyiv’s appeal comes amid continued Russian attacks on vital infrastructure across Ukraine. In recent days, Russia has launched widespread attacks using drones and missiles, targeting residential areas, infrastructure facilities, and energy installations.
Ukrainian authorities are seeking to strengthen vital infrastructure capabilities before winter, amid growing concerns about the impact of continued Russian strikes on basic services and the ability to meet the needs of the population.
