Beirut, Lebanon – A spokesperson for the US State Department confirmed that Lebanon and Israel remain engaged in what he described as a constructive dialogue. He also indicated that the next round of talks between the two sides is scheduled to take place soon in Rome, Italy.
Ongoing dialogue and American sponsorship
The spokesperson told Sky News Arabia that contacts between Lebanon and Israel are ongoing within the framework of the US-sponsored political process. Despite continued disagreements on several issues under negotiation, these contacts persist.
The US confirmation comes as Washington seeks to keep channels of dialogue open. Meanwhile, discussions continue on political and security issues related to the situation on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
A new tour of Rome
The spokesperson explained that the next round of talks in Rome will be held soon, as part of the ongoing negotiations between the two sides. Previous rounds have addressed military, political, and legal issues, as well as matters related to borders, prisoners, and proposed pilot zones.
Washington had previously announced that the Rome negotiations had made progress on both technical and procedural levels. As discussions continue regarding the steps needed to expand the scope of the negotiation process, the focus is increasingly on the technical aspects.
Pressure to maintain the political course
The US announcement comes amid complex field and political challenges surrounding the negotiations. Therefore, continued dialogue is one of the key strategies Washington is relying on to prevent an escalation of tensions between Lebanon and Israel.
The spokesperson asserted that certain parties, whom he described as “ill-intentioned,” were attempting to create a negative atmosphere surrounding the talks. He was referring to efforts to influence the negotiation process and undermine the chances of progress.
By sponsoring the talks, the United States seeks to maintain the diplomatic track as a means of addressing outstanding issues, at a time when security and political challenges continue to cast a shadow over relations between the two sides.
