Washington, D.C. – A Virginia elementary school was the scene of a terrifying ordeal after a 19-year-old gunman entered the building and opened fire, injuring a staff member, before being killed himself. Police received a report of an armed individual inside Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro and immediately responded, establishing a security perimeter around the school and implementing emergency procedures to protect students and staff.
According to authorities, police arrived at the school minutes after receiving the report and found the attacker inside the school library. He had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and died from his injuries. During the incident, a school employee was also shot and taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition later allowed him to be discharged. Authorities have not reported any other injuries.
Security officials confirmed that no students were in the library at the time of the shooting.
