Paris, France — French authorities completed the evacuation of 44 Palestinian citizens—including scientists, artists, and academics—from the Gaza Strip in a phased operation concluded on August 24. Diplomatic sources confirmed that the initiative aims to protect beneficiaries of official French scholarship programs and endangered scholars supported by the “PAUSE” program. Furthermore, France has intensified operations to safeguard its citizens, their families, and staff associated with the French Institute in Gaza amid deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions.

Evacuation Logistics and Academic Grants

A senior French diplomatic source stated that most evacuees held official government research and educational grants, while others qualified under scientific excellence programs. In addition, several scholars and artists were integrated into the “PAUSE” protection framework designed for vulnerable individuals in conflict zones. Consequently, the multi-stage evacuation required complex field arrangements to navigate logistical and security hurdles across Gaza.

The ‘PAUSE’ Program and Intellectual Protection

Meanwhile, the “PAUSE” program—established by the Collège de France in 2017—serves as a primary mechanism to host scientists, academics, and artists facing severe threats to their safety. As a result, the initiative enables beneficiaries to relocate to France, providing a secure environment to continue their academic research and artistic projects without interruption.

Ultimately, the evacuation underscores France’s commitment to protecting partner scholars and cultural figures operating in high-risk zones. In conclusion, leveraging specialized reception frameworks like the “PAUSE” program remains vital for preserving global scientific and artistic heritage during humanitarian crises.
