Seoul, South Korea – South Korea has revealed that it is facing US pressure related to its stance on a potential war with Iran. This comes as Washington and Seoul have decided to scale back their joint military exercises. The move has raised questions about the future of defense cooperation between the two allies. South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated that messages from US President Donald Trump appear to be pressuring Seoul regarding its position on a potential war with Iran. He also indicated that several political and economic issues are under discussion between the two countries.

This coincided with a reduction in the duration of the annual joint military exercises between US and South Korean forces. The training period was shortened from 11 days to five. Some field exercises were also reduced, with a greater reliance placed on computer-simulated drills and simulations. This decision comes at a time of increasing tension between Washington and Seoul regarding the role South Korea should play in US military operations against Iran, given Seoul’s preference for not being directly involved in such operations.

Political and security circles in South Korea believe that the reduction in military exercises is not without political dimensions, especially given the Trump administration’s desire to reorder US military alliances. The administration also aims to reduce the cost of joint drills while Washington seeks to keep the door open for resuming dialogue with North Korea. These developments are raising concerns in South Korea that the reduction in exercises could affect the level of military readiness and operational coordination between South Korean and US forces. This is particularly relevant given the continued threats posed by North Korea and its missile and nuclear programs.

In contrast, Seoul reaffirms its commitment to the security and military alliance with Washington. It also continues to develop its defense capabilities and enhance its ability to independently address the security challenges facing the Korean Peninsula. The convergence of these developments with the war in Iran and the trade and investment issues between Washington and Seoul places the South Korea-US alliance at a new stage of negotiations. Therefore, the coming period may witness a redefinition of the nature of the mutual military and political commitments between the two countries.
