Kyiv, Ukraine – Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian president’s special envoy, said that the recent actions and statements of former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov reflect growing political ambitions and may also indicate his readiness to run for the country’s highest office. Dmitriev explained that Fedorov’s call for elections and his criticism of the performance of state institutions and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have clear political dimensions. He also considered them a direct challenge to the current leadership in Kyiv.
The Russian official’s remarks come at a time of heightened political debate in Ukraine regarding the future of power and elections. These discussions continue amidst the ongoing war with Russia and the state of martial law, which currently prevents holding elections. Fedorov has intensified his criticism of state institutions, calling for the Ukrainian people to be given the opportunity to choose their leadership through new elections. Dmitriev interpreted this as an attempt to position himself as a political figure capable of challenging Zelensky.
Observers believe that any escalation of disputes within the Ukrainian leadership could pave the way for a reshaping of the post-war political landscape. This is especially true if new figures with popular support emerge and present themselves as alternatives to the current leadership. Moscow is closely monitoring these developments, given its focus on internal divisions in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kyiv faces mounting military, economic, and political challenges as the war continues and its repercussions on state institutions persist.
