Moscow, Russia – The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency announced on Friday the imposition of temporary restrictions on air traffic at Sochi Airport, without providing any further details regarding the reasons behind the decision or the expected duration of its continuation, in a move that comes within the framework of periodic measures announced by the Russian authorities “to ensure flight safety”.
Sochi Airport has experienced similar measures on previous occasions, most notably the restrictions imposed on the morning and evening of February 23.
During that period, airport authorities were forced to divert 11 flights to alternative airports to ensure passenger safety. The airport’s press office stated at the time: “Airlines are providing drinks and meals, and in the event of significant delays, they are prepared to accommodate passengers in hotels.” Observers also noted sporadic temporary restrictions throughout 2026, including a recent instance around July 28, which are typically lifted within hours once the risks subside.
Sochi Airport, located on the Black Sea coast in Krasnodar Krai, is experiencing frequent short-term closures and disruptions.
These precautionary measures are largely linked to the activity of long-range Ukrainian drones or related air defense alerts in southern Russia.
