Bucharest, Romania – The Romanian Air Force shot down a drone that violated the country’s airspace, the third such incident in three days, reflecting escalating security tensions on NATO’s eastern border as the war in Ukraine continues.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense announced that an F-16 fighter jet intercepted the drone after it entered Romanian airspace without authorization and successfully shot it down. The ministry confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the drone’s origin and operator.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan affirmed that the repeated violations of his country’s airspace are unacceptable, emphasizing that Romania will continue to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, in coordination with its NATO allies.
This incident comes amid an increase in drone attacks near the Romanian border, prompting Bucharest to bolster the readiness of its air force and defense systems, amid concerns about escalating security tensions in the region due to the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
