Beirut, Lebanon – Units of the Lebanese Army entered the town of Zawtar al-Gharbiya in southern Lebanon as part of the first phase of the framework agreement on security arrangements with Israel. This deployment is part of a plan to bolster the presence of regular forces in the southern regions and consolidate stability along the border.

The Lebanese Army’s deployment was coordinated with relevant parties and the international forces operating in southern Lebanon, in a move aimed at extending state authority over the areas covered by the agreement. This step also aims to create a secure environment conducive to the implementation of the remaining agreed-upon provisions, foremost among them the consolidation of the ceasefire and the reduction of any field tensions.

The first phase of the agreement includes the redeployment of Lebanese forces in several border towns and villages, alongside field arrangements aimed at reducing the potential for friction. Conditions are also being created for the completion of the planned withdrawals according to the agreed-upon timetable. This is being done with ongoing coordination among the parties involved to ensure the smooth implementation of the measures.

This development comes amidst intensive diplomatic efforts led by the United States and international partners to support stability in southern Lebanon. The deployment of the Lebanese army is seen as a pivotal step in strengthening security and reasserting state authority. This deployment also paves the way for a return to normalcy in areas affected by tensions in recent months.

Observers believe that the success of this phase will be a crucial test of the parties’ commitment to implementing the security understandings. Such success could pave the way for the completion of subsequent phases of the agreement, thereby contributing to consolidating calm on the southern border and reducing the likelihood of renewed military confrontations in the coming period.
