New York, USA – UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the violent Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
He also expressed concern over the continued targeting of civilian areas and the worsening humanitarian situation.
Condemnation of the attack on Kyiv
The UN Secretary-General affirmed that the recent attack on Kyiv represents a dangerous escalation.
He also stressed the need to respect international humanitarian law
and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure during armed conflicts.
Call for the protection of civilians
Guterres reiterated to the United Nations his call for all necessary measures to be taken to protect civilians.
He also urged the parties to the conflict to comply with their obligations
under international law and to refrain from any actions that endanger civilian lives.
Demanding a halt to the escalation
The UN Secretary-General stressed the importance of halting the military escalation and advancing diplomatic efforts to end the war.
He emphasized that continued fighting leads to further loss of life and human suffering.
He also explained that this undermines the chances of reaching a peaceful solution to the crisis.
