Ramallah, Palestine – The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has issued a firm statement rejecting any attempts to question the professional status of journalists killed while covering events. The Syndicate declared that such allegations are a direct insult to the victims of the profession and a transparent attempt to evade legal and moral responsibility for the egregious violations committed against media personnel.
Professional Documentation: A Fact Beyond Dispute
In its official statement, the Syndicate emphasized that all journalists who lost their lives while performing their duties were operating according to internationally recognized professional standards. The Syndicate confirmed that it possesses records and official documents proving their affiliation with the media institutions they served, noting that targeting these professionals or questioning their professional status does not alter the established fact that they were killed while fulfilling their noble mission of reporting events to the world.
International Protection: A Fundamental Right
The Syndicate asserted that Palestinian journalists are entitled to the full protection guaranteed by international laws and charters, most notably the Geneva Conventions. It clarified that targeting media personnel, or attempting to justify these violations under any pretext, constitutes a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law and the principles of press freedom guaranteed by the international community.
A Call for Rights-Based Action and Accountability
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate issued an urgent appeal to international media institutions, human rights organizations, and press freedom bodies, calling on them to:
- Reject systematic campaigns aimed at casting doubt on Palestinian journalists.
- Intensify efforts to document all violations faced by media personnel in the field.
- Work seriously to pursue and hold those responsible for these crimes accountable under international law.
A Commitment to the Mission
The Syndicate concluded by reaffirming its continued commitment to defending the rights of Palestinian journalists and protecting their professional standing. It demanded that the international community move from mere condemnation to taking practical steps to ensure the safety of media personnel in conflict zones. The Syndicate stressed that the truth will remain alive, and attempts to silence it by targeting those who report it will not succeed in suppressing the narrative.
