Washington, DC – The US Treasury Department announced the designation of several Hezbollah-affiliated financial institutions as terrorist entities.
This move is part of a new package of sanctions targeting the group’s financial infrastructure.
The sanctions also target a number of individuals and entities associated with Hezbollah.
Financial institutions on the terrorism list
The US Treasury Department explained that the decision included designating financial institutions affiliated
with Hezbollah, including the Al-Qard Al-Hasan Foundation and the Beit Al-Mal Foundation.
These institutions were designated as part of the financial network upon which the party relies.
The Treasury Department emphasized that the sanctions aim to limit
the party’s access to financial resources and to curtail support for its activities.
Sanctions on entities and individuals
The US Treasury Department added that the decision also includes sanctions on five entities and 16 individuals
for their ties to Hezbollah’s financial institutions or their role in facilitating its financial activities.
It noted that these measures are part of Washington’s policy to intensify
economic pressure on the party and target its financial networks.
Continued US pressure
The new sanctions are part of a series of measures the United States has taken in recent years to target Hezbollah’s funding sources.
This is done by imposing restrictions on institutions and individuals
whom Washington accuses of providing financial or logistical support to the party.
The US administration asserts that these sanctions aim to undermine Hezbollah’s financial capabilities.
They also aim to prevent the use of designated institutions to finance its activities inside and outside Lebanon.
