Cairo, Egypt – China has expressed its strong rejection of the ongoing negotiations between Japan and the Philippines aimed at delimiting maritime borders and cooperating in disputed areas. Beijing considers any bilateral agreements or arrangements concluded without regard for its sovereign rights and interests to be a violation of its established legal and historical positions in the region.
Beijing Rejects Complicating Regional Conditions
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is closely monitoring diplomatic moves between Tokyo and Manila, stressing that maritime sovereignty issues must be resolved through direct dialogue between the concerned parties and in accordance with international law. China warned that any unilateral steps aimed at changing the status quo or infringing upon the legitimate rights of other nations would increase regional tensions.
Beijing added in its statement its opposition to any actions that could complicate the security landscape in Asian seas. It stated that these negotiations could negatively impact the state of stability and security in the region, placing the parties involved before the responsibility for any potential escalation affecting vital waterways.
Tokyo and Manila Emphasize Joint Cooperation
In contrast, both Japan and the Philippines affirm that their bilateral talks fall strictly within the framework of strengthening maritime cooperation and regulating economic activities. Both countries emphasize that these understandings are primarily aimed at protecting their mutual interests and ensuring freedom of maritime navigation in accordance with international standards and laws.
These talks come at a time when the East China Sea and the South China Sea have been witnessing intertwined and ongoing disputes for years. Diplomatic and military movements from states bordering these areas are increasing in an effort to consolidate maritime sovereignty and control natural resources, making any new bilateral agreement a subject of broad international attention.
Struggle for Influence in Global Trade Routes
Observers believe that recent Chinese statements reflect the depth of geopolitical disputes over maritime boundary files in East Asia. As competing parties seek to bolster their influence, these areas remain strategic pillars due to their critical importance for global trade and energy supply flows, making regional stability dependent on international and regional power balances.
