Tel Aviv, Israel – In what has been described as the deadliest security incident in weeks on the northern front, the Israeli army announced on Friday, June 19, 2026, the deaths of four soldiers. Among the dead was the commander of the 52nd Battalion of the 401st Armored Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Dor Gadalia Ben Simhon. Their tank was targeted in southern Lebanon.
Details of the field incident
The Israeli army clarified that the incident occurred Thursday night/Friday morning in the vicinity of the town of Kfar Tibnit in southern Lebanon. The tank was operating as part of a combat force led by the Givati Brigade.
Initial investigations indicate that the tank sustained a direct hit, resulting in the death of its entire crew. Meanwhile, the military is still investigating the nature of the weapon used. Amid speculation that it was a “suspicious aerial target” or an anti-tank guided missile, the area became a scene of intense fighting that lasted for hours as efforts were made to retrieve the dead and wounded.
Far-right demands for “total war”
The incident sparked a wave of hawkish statements within the Israeli government. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for moving beyond containment and adopting what he termed “fiery rhetoric.” He also demanded that “the gates of hell” be opened and attacks intensified in response to what he described as “a difficult morning.”
In a related development, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir reiterated his extremist stance on the “X” platform. He called for “burning all of Lebanon,” asserting that the security of Israeli soldiers is not subject to any political considerations or international pressure.
Ben-Gvir emphasized that Israel is a sovereign state “and not a banana republic,” indicating his rejection of any restrictions that might be imposed by the recent agreement to end the war. He also called for an unprecedented military escalation targeting the Lebanese interior and Beirut.
The security situation under the faltering truce
This escalation on the ground comes at a time when the region is awaiting the repercussions of the recently signed memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war. However, the ongoing violations on the ground are further complicating the situation.
Concurrently with the Israeli army’s losses, local reports indicate civilian casualties in intensive Israeli airstrikes targeting residential areas in Nabatieh. This suggests that the Lebanese front remains active despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.
