Baghdad, Iraq – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani discussed with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert,
the latest developments regarding the missing Kuwaitis and missing Kuwaiti property.
This comes within the framework of ongoing cooperation between Baghdad
and the United Nations to resolve this humanitarian issue that has remained unresolved for decades.
Accelerating search and investigation operations
During the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of continued coordination between Iraqi institutions
and relevant international bodies to expedite search and investigation operations.
This will contribute to determining the fate of missing persons and completing procedures related
to missing property in accordance with established humanitarian and legal standards.
The Iraqi Prime Minister stressed his government’s commitment to full cooperation with the UN and relevant committees.
He also noted that Baghdad has made significant progress on this issue
in recent years through field operations and the exchange of relevant information and data.
Addressing outstanding humanitarian issues
For her part, the UN official commended the efforts of the Iraqi authorities in addressing outstanding humanitarian issues.
She also stressed the importance of continued joint work to maintain the momentum achieved recently.
She emphasized the need to reach tangible results that contribute to resolving this sensitive matter.
The issue of missing Kuwaitis is among the most prominent remaining issues since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
The United Nations, Iraq, and Kuwait continue their joint efforts to determine the fate of the missing and recover lost property and archives.
This is part of a process aimed at strengthening trust and consolidating relations between the two countries.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides affirmed the importance of continuing dialogue and regional
and international cooperation to address outstanding humanitarian issues.
This will support stability and enhance bilateral relations between Iraq and Kuwait in the coming period.
