Tel Aviv, Israel – The Israeli army threatened to launch airstrikes targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, if Hezbollah continues its rocket attacks toward northern Israel.
An Israeli military spokesperson said the military is closely monitoring developments on the northern front.
He emphasized that any further escalation by Hezbollah would be met
with a broad and direct response targeting locations deep inside Lebanon.
Mutual escalation on the northern front
The Israeli army stated that the continued rocket fire from southern Lebanon poses a direct threat to northern Israeli settlements.
It also indicated that Israeli forces are on high alert to respond to any developments on the ground.
The military added that Tel Aviv will not hesitate to expand its military operations if the attacks continue.
This includes targeting sites it describes as belonging to Hezbollah within Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Warnings of a widening confrontation
These threats by the Israeli army come in light of the escalation of tensions on the Lebanese-Israeli border during the recent period,
with the increasing exchange of bombing between the two sides and the extension of military operations to new areas.
Observers believe that any targeting of the southern suburb may open the door to a major escalation in the confrontation.
This is due to it being a major stronghold for Hezbollah, which may expand the scope of the war in the region.
Regional concerns and calls for calm
Meanwhile, international and regional calls are growing to contain the escalation and prevent the situation
from spiraling into a full-blown confrontation.
This comes amid warnings of widespread security and humanitarian
repercussions should military operations between the two sides expand.
The Lebanese-Israeli front remains vulnerable to further tension
as threats continue to be exchanged and limited military operations take place.
This situation persists with no clear path to de-escalation thus far.
