Brussels, Belgium – The European Union has confirmed that it will not be a neutral mediator between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing its full support for Kyiv in the ongoing conflict.
European officials stated that the EU position has been clear since the beginning of the crisis:
to support Ukraine politically, militarily, and economically.
They also asserted that the situation is a matter of European security and stability.
Continued support for Kyiv
The European Union affirmed its continued support for Ukraine, including financial, military, and humanitarian aid.
Sanctions against Russia will also remain in place.
Officials in Brussels indicated that the EU considers defending Ukraine part of protecting the European order and international law.
They also confirmed that support will continue in the coming period.
Rejecting the idea of neutrality
The European Union clarified that talk of a “neutral mediator” role is inconsistent with its political stance on the war.
This comes amid what it describes as Russia’s violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Brussels added that any diplomatic efforts to end the war must take Ukrainian
interests into account and be carried out in full coordination with Kyiv.
Tensions with Moscow have escalated
The European statement comes at a time of escalating tensions between the EU and Russia
over the ongoing war in Ukraine and the reciprocal economic sanctions imposed by both sides.
The European position also reflects the continued international division over the war.
This is occurring amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts and international attempts
to push the parties toward a political settlement to end the conflict.
