Abu Dhabi, UAE – In a move reflecting a growing regional and international consensus, the Foreign Ministers of eight countries (the UAE, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar) issued a joint statement. They took a firm stance against the actions of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The statement strongly condemned the “horrendous, humiliating, and unacceptable” acts committed against participants in the “Gaza Flotilla” during their detention by Israeli authorities. Moreover, it described these actions as a dangerous breach of international law and international humanitarian law. This move reflects deep concern over the shift in Israeli government conduct. The ministers believe the new practices lack the most basic ethical and humanitarian standards.
Assault on Dignity: When “Humiliation” Becomes Policy
Furthermore, the statement did not limit itself to political condemnation. It focused on the moral dimension of the incident, deeming the “deliberate public humiliation” of detainees a direct assault on human dignity. The ministers asserted in their statement that Israel, as the occupying power, bears full legal responsibility for these violations, which contradict the Geneva Conventions on human rights and the protection of civilians. According to the statement, what transpired is not an isolated act. Instead, it is part of a series of practices aimed at breaking the will of activists and threatening their safety.
Incitement.. “Fuel” for Extremism in the Region
In the same context, the ministers raised alarm regarding the inflammatory rhetoric led by Ben-Gvir and other officials against Palestinians. The joint statement warned that these “systematic provocations” not only undermine the chances for a just peace based on the two-state solution but also serve as “fuel” that feeds hatred and extremism in a region that cannot afford further instability. Consequently, the ministers called for the need to isolate this extremist discourse. It places the region in direct confrontation with universal human values and international laws.
Demands for Accountability: “No Immunity for Violations”
Ultimately, the statement carried a clear message to the international community and relevant parties: “These transgressions cannot be ignored.” The ministers demanded that Itamar Ben-Gvir be held tangibly accountable. They called for deterrent measures to stop the ongoing incitement. The joint signature of this diverse regional alliance signals that infringing upon human rights and dignity in the occupied Palestinian territories has become a “red line.” Therefore, international solidarity is required to prevent recurrence and ensure humane treatment. It should be free from policies of arbitrariness and intimidation.
