Rome, Italy – Italy, Britain, France, and Germany have warned of the potential legal consequences for companies involved in building or supporting Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In a joint statement, the four countries emphasized that settlement-related
activities could expose companies to legal, financial, and reputational risks.
They also stressed that settlements are illegal under international law and undermine the prospects for a two-state solution.
Warning to European companies
European governments urged companies and institutions to exercise caution when engaging in projects or investments linked to settlements,
whether directly or indirectly, to avoid legal action or international criticism.
The statement noted that economic activities in settlements may be
linked to violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
Furthermore, this imposes additional responsibilities on companies operating in those areas.
Adhere to the two-state solution
The four European countries reaffirmed their commitment to the two-state solution as the only way to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East,
expressing their rejection of continued Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories.
They also stressed that settlement expansion exacerbates tensions
and undermines the prospects for resuming the political process between the Palestinians and Israelis.
European criticism escalates
The European statement comes amid escalating international criticism of Israeli settlement policies,
coinciding with repeated warnings from the United Nations and human rights organizations
about the repercussions of settlement expansion on the humanitarian and political situation in the Palestinian territories.
The European Union has repeatedly affirmed that settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are illegal under international law.
It has also called on Israel to halt settlement construction and expansion.
This new European stance is expected to increase political
and economic pressure related to business activities in the settlements in the coming period.
