Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed that the nuclear triad is a reliable guarantee of the sovereignty of Russia and Belarus, emphasizing the importance of strategic nuclear capabilities
in maintaining the balance of deterrence and national security of both countries.
Putin stated that Moscow continues to strengthen its defense and strategic systems in light of international security challenges,
considering Russia’s nuclear forces a fundamental element in protecting Russian interests and preventing any external threats.
Emphasis on the strength of nuclear deterrence
Putin explained that the nuclear triad, comprising land-based missiles, nuclear submarines,
and strategic aviation, remains the cornerstone of Russia’s deterrence system,
emphasizing that the development of these capabilities will continue in accordance with international changes.
The Russian president noted that military and strategic cooperation
between Moscow and Minsk also includes coordination on defense and security issues related to nuclear deterrence.
Nuclear weapons are a “last resort”
In the same vein, Putin emphasized that the use of nuclear weapons remains a “last resort,” referring to Russia’s nuclear doctrine,
which links the use of such weapons to a direct threat to the state’s sovereignty or national security.
He added that Russia does not seek escalation but reserves the right to take
whatever measures it deems necessary to protect its security and strategic interests.
Putin’s remarks come amid continued tensions between Russia and the West and growing international concerns about an expanding nuclear arms race,
along with repeated calls to strengthen strategic dialogue and reduce the risk of military confrontation between major powers.
