Ohio, USA – The city of Akron, Ohio, awoke to the details of a horrific mid-air crash on Thursday afternoon, in which two people were killed when a small plane collided with a residential building. The crash sparked a massive fire and sent plumes of thick smoke billowing into the sky.
Despite the devastating impact that destroyed large sections of the home, authorities described the residents’ survival as a “true miracle.”
Details of the moment of impact
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crashed aircraft was a single-engine Piper Cherokee, a 1963 model.
The plane had departed Akron Fulton Airport shortly before the crash, which occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. local time. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The pilot lost control, and the aircraft crashed directly into the roof of a residential building. The resulting explosion and fire caused significant damage to the building and neighboring homes.
The family’s “miraculous” survival and material damage
Akron Fire Chief Sergei Lash told local media that the incident could have been a massacre, as a couple and their two children were inside the home when it was struck.
Lash confirmed that the family managed to escape the flames at the last minute without sustaining any injuries. He added, “It’s incredibly fortunate to see this family safe after the extent of the devastation we witnessed.”
Emergency crews also evacuated the damaged residence and a neighboring house as a precaution. Authorities confirmed that no bystanders or neighbors on the ground were injured. The fatalities were limited to the two people on board the aircraft, whose bodies were recovered from the wreckage.
Intensive investigations into the causes of the accident
Firefighters managed to control and extinguish the blaze after a strenuous effort. Police established a security perimeter around the crash site, urging residents to avoid the area to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are scheduled to launch a comprehensive investigation to determine the technical or human factors that led to the crash.
This tragic incident in Ohio comes just hours after a medical plane crashed in the mountains of New Mexico, killing four people and sparking a wildfire, raising further concerns about the safety of general aviation and older small aircraft in American airspace.
