Damascus – The UAE and Syria explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of Fatwa and religious affairs. This took place during a high-level meeting between Dr. Omar Habtoor Al-Darei, Chairman of the General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat, and Sheikh Osama Abdul Karim Al-Rifa’i, Grand Mufti of Syria, on the sidelines of the Syrian-UAE Investment Forum in Damascus.
Discussions focused on the importance of providing moderate fatwas that keep pace with modern changes and meet community needs with wisdom and facilitation. Both parties stressed that sound fatwas directly contribute to enhancing coexistence and cooperation, serving as a barrier against extremist ideologies that lead to division and hatred.
Unifying Efforts to Reflect the Tolerance of Islam
During the meeting, officials emphasized that integration between religious institutions and scholars represents a strategic step toward unifying efforts and exchanging expertise. This cooperation aims to issue fatwas that reflect the tolerant nature of Islam and its ability to handle various developments while fully preserving fundamental religious values.
Moderation as a Pillar for Social Stability and National Cohesion
The meeting concluded by highlighting that moderate religious discourse is a primary safeguard for consolidating social stability and fostering mutual respect. Both sides affirmed that spreading values of moderation and tolerance is a fundamental pillar for protecting communities from extremism, ultimately enhancing national cohesion.
