Manama, Bahrain – In a judicial move reflecting firmness in confronting security threats, the High Criminal Court in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in its session held today, Tuesday, issued a life sentence against two defendants, after convicting them of spying for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps with the intention of carrying out terrorist and hostile acts against the Kingdom and harming its supreme national interests.
Details of the terrorist plot
The case stems from precise intelligence information corroborated by investigations conducted by the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science. These investigations uncovered a plot orchestrated by Iranian intelligence agencies and the Revolutionary Guard Corps, involving the funding and assignment of leaders to terrorist groups based in Iran.
According to the investigations, the plot aimed to monitor several vital and sensitive installations within the Kingdom of Bahrain in preparation for targeting them with sabotage operations, seeking to destabilize security and undermine the country’s safety.
The intensive investigations resulted in uncovering the recruitment mechanism; where the first defendant (who fled to the Islamic Republic of Iran) recruited the second defendant (who was inside Bahrain) and assigned him logistical tasks that included transferring and delivering funds allocated to support terrorist elements, in addition to monitoring vital sites and passing on their coordinates and detailed information to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard at the latter’s request, to prepare them as potential targets during periods of tension and Iranian aggression against the region.
Prosecution procedures and guarantees of justice
Upon receiving the report, the Terrorism Crimes Prosecution Office launched a comprehensive investigation, which included interrogating the defendants and hearing witness testimonies. Technical experts were also appointed to examine the seized electronic devices, which contained conclusive digital evidence confirming the defendants’ involvement in the charges against them.
Consequently, they were referred to court, which today sentenced them to life imprisonment, imposed a fine of 10,000 Bahraini dinars, and ordered the confiscation of all seized items.
The head of the Terrorism Crimes Prosecution Office confirmed that the trial took place over several sessions, with full adherence to the guarantees of a fair trial, including enabling the defendants’ lawyers to present their legal defenses.
This verdict underscores the vigilance of Bahrain’s security and judicial authorities in countering attempts at foreign interference and protecting national achievements from any cross-border terrorist threats.
