Paris, France – French shipping giant CMA CGM announced Wednesday that its vessel, the San Antonio, was attacked while transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The attack resulted in injuries to crew members and damage to the ship.
Details of the attack and evacuation of the wounded
The company explained in an official statement that the attack occurred on Tuesday in an area considered one of the most vital waterways for global trade.
The group confirmed that immediate action was taken to evacuate the crew members injured in the attack. It indicated that they are currently receiving necessary medical care at nearby health centers. However, it did not disclose the severity of the injuries or the nationalities of those affected.
The company added: “CMACGM is closely monitoring the situation on the ground and stands ready to provide full support to the crew members and their families during these difficult circumstances.”
The company’s initial statement did not specify who carried out the attack or the type of weapon used.
Context of maritime tensions
This attack comes at a time of heightened security tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, with regional and international powers trading accusations of obstructing international shipping and laying sea mines.
Targeting a vessel belonging to a shipping group the size of CMA CGM is a worrying development. It could prompt global shipping companies to reassess their routes or raise insurance premiums for shipments transiting the region.
Security experts believe that the attack on the San Antonio could increase international pressure to form maritime security alliances to guarantee freedom of navigation.
While authorities in the region remain silent regarding the details of the incident, the economic community is watching closely to see the repercussions of this attack on supply chains. This is especially true given that approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil consumption passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Therefore, any threat to the safety of ships in this waterway could ignite energy prices and affect global economic stability.
